There are many myths around the process of psychotherapy and counselling. Let's try to shed some light on some of them by answering questions we are often asked.

How do I know if I need psychotherapy?

There are a number of reasons why you may decide to start psychotherapy: to clear up an issue, to change old habits, to untangle complex personal issues, or for personal growth. You may seek psychotherapy because of a personal crisis, or you may be encouraged by family or friends. Most people decide to start psychotherapy when these difficulties have become so great that they feel they are affecting their daily life negatively and are finding it difficult to manage.

What happens during a session?

There is no one standard session format. The session lasts 50 minutes and this is your time to talk about whatever is on your mind. You are free to refer to events in your daily life, dilemmas, thoughts, expectations, memories and dreams. At Psy-Nest we provide a safe space for you to explore the issues that are bothering you and move towards self-improvement.

What issues can psychotherapy and counselling help with?

Clients bring a wide range of problems to therapy which include anxiety (panic attacks, agoraphobia, generalized anxiety disorder, claustrophobia), work pressure, life-work imbalance, relationship issues (separation, divorce, choosing the wrong partners, loneliness, marital problems, fights, jealousy), sexual problems (impotence, sexual addiction), loss of sexual desire), trauma (PTSD, sexual abuse and other assaults), OCD, eating disorders (bulimia, anorexia, distorted body image), depression (low mood, social isolation, suicidal ideation), phobias, substance addiction and abuse, low self-esteem and confidence, abuse (physical and verbal), bereavement and loss. The most common reasons someone seeks treatment are anxiety, depression, and relationship difficulties.

What kind of person goes for treatment?

There is no one particular type of person who will seek psychotherapy and counselling, and very different types of people benefit from it. All it takes is a willingness to change and an appetite for work. At Psy-Nest we welcome and encourage diversity, with our Psychologists having worked with people from all socio-political-economic backgrounds, regardless of their religion, race, gender, and sexual preference.

How long will I have to do psychotherapy?

The length of psychotherapy varies and depends entirely on you and the nature of the issues you bring to therapy. However, no real work can be done if the duration of therapy is less than at least six to twelve months. In psychotherapy there is an in-depth analysis of the issues that are troubling you with the ultimate goal of finding the causes and not just treating the symptoms. It is important to come after making a conscious decision about what you seek and expect from a psychotherapy process and to understand that psychotherapy requires a commitment of psychological, time and financial resources for a short period of your life. The first meeting will allow you to gain a clearer picture of whether psychotherapy is appropriate in your situation. If you decide to start psychotherapy, there will be a review of progress every 6 sessions.

Will the sessions be confidential?

The content and details of the sessions are completely confidential between the client and the Psychologist (Law 991 of 117/20,12,1979, Article 9, GG A 278). This Professional Confidentiality does not include cases where:

Ι. Serious injury or harm to a person is about to occur.

II. Child abuse has been disclosed.

III. There is going to be some violation of the law.

IV. The Psychologist is called to testify in court.

Can the psychologist prescribe me medication?

Psychologists - Psychotherapists are not certified doctors, and therefore they do not have the right or the necessary knowledge to prescribe medication. Psychiatrists have studied medicine, not psychotherapy, with the exception of those who have extended their studies to include psychotherapy and list it in their title. So Psychiatrists are the ones who can prescribe tranquilizers, antidepressants and other medications that may be necessary in your case, but which usually only treat the symptoms without solving the real causes of the problems. In the event that you need medication, at Psy-Nest we can recommend excellent psychiatrists with whom we work with to further assist you in your treatment process.

Why do the sessions have to be held every week?

Regularity is very important for the therapeutic process to be effective. The standard form of treatment, which is weekly sessions, helps you to make gradual and steady progress. In some cases, if we decide that it will be beneficial, we may agree another treatment plan for you, which may be two sessions a week or two sessions a month for a period of time.

Why am I charged for sessions that I cancel with less than 24 hours notice?

If you eventually decide to start treatment after our initial meeting, we will set aside a specific time one day each week for you. This time will be exclusively yours. It will never be used to see another client nor will you ever have to wait to start your session. It is important to come for therapy after you have made a conscious decision about what you seek and expect from this process, and to understand that psychotherapy and counseling require a commitment of psychological, time and financial resources for a short period of your life. This commitment is also given on our part so that an effective therapeutic relationship can develop, which according to research is the most important factor for a successful development of therapy.

Can I refer someone for treatment?

Friends, family and colleagues may be concerned about the mental health of someone close to them. It is much more helpful for that person to communicate themselves, as an important step in treatment is to acknowledge our need for help. We can resolve queries on behalf of someone else, but the appointment should be made via telephone by the person concerned.
